CHAP Running Club

Posted at 07/26/2016 11:44:07 PM EDT

Dear Chariots,

I hope you're all having a great summer break, but also beginning to think about the fall, and our upcoming XC season. Here are a few details to help get you thinking about running again:

  1. CHAP RUNNING CLUB meets on M,W,F at Hawk Island from 4-5:30pm, and T,TH at Lake Lansing North from 4-5:30pm. We are only about 1 month out from the official beginning of XC practices, so now is the time to start running again if you have not started already. Running over the next month on your own, or with our Running Club, will make the practices much easier and less painful when they begin in mid August.

  2. RECOMMENDED MILEAGE is only 10-15 miles/week for those just beginning to run. Think about trying to do 2-3 miles 3 times a week, like M,W,F for starters. Then build up from there to running every day by adding no more than 3-5 miles week. If you start now, within 4 weeks you should be running about 25 miles/week when practice officially begins. However, if you really want to race at your best this fall and improve most dramatically, you should be at or above 25 miles/week already and committed to running through the summer, not to mention doing some extra core and strength work too.

  3. MILEAGE LOGS are a helpful way to keep track of your running, and to let your coach know what you've been doing. This helps provide the accountability we all need for voluntary off-season conditioning. Please email me on Sundays with a brief summary of your previous week's mileage, and especially if you hope or plan to run in the top 10 on our Varsity boys or girls teams. PRIZES/REWARDS: For those who log and report more than 150 miles this summer I will have a special t-shirt to honor you with this fall! In addition, the first meet (St. Johns "Under The Lights" Invitational on Friday, Aug. 19) will only be for those Sr. High team members who run and log over 100 miles before this meet takes place (including the first week of team practices).

  4. OFFICIAL PRACTICES will begin on Wednesday, August 10th at 4pm at Hawk Island Park. Please spread the word to others who may be interested in CHAP XC, and feel free to forward this email to other homeschool families. If you will miss any significant practice time (several days or a week) due to vacation time, or summer camp please be sure to let me know in advance, and be prepared to do the daily workouts on your own as much as possible.

  5. TEAM REGISTRATION now happens entirely through the CHAP website. You can sign up to run with us at chapchariots.org. Just go to the REGISTRATION tab and select Cross Country Fall 2016. This page is not there yet, but should be up and running in the next few days after I contact our CHAP webmaster. There will also be some forms to fill out and sign, which can be mailed to me, or handed in after practices begin.

  6. SEASON SCHEDULES are already up on our Athletic.net web pages. You'll notice a few changes to be aware of, but most of the same meets we've run before are still on the schedule. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Jr. High Schedule is here: http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/School.aspx?SchoolID=42509

Sr. High Schedule is here: http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/School.aspx?SchoolID=42508

  7. HPA CONFLICTS are only possible with our two Friday meets, the MSU Spartan Invite on Sept. 16th, and the Alma College Scottie Classic on Oct. 21. For these two meets you may need to request an early dismissal from HPA practice depending on the rehearsal schedule and the actual meet schedule. Please don't forget to include these dates on your HPA Audition Registration forms.

  8. OFF SEASON XC STRENGTH & CONDITIONING WORKOUTS are also being offered by Mr. Schaub at The Workout Studio on Dunkle Road (near Trinity Church). These 1 hour workouts are optional and he can only accommodate about 15 kids at a time. The two weekly workouts offered are on Mondays at 2:00pm and Fridays at 12:00pm. This is a great way to gain some extra strength and flexibility before our season begins, and I highly recommend this... especially for our High School Varsity level runners.

  9. CHAP CROSS CAMP will be happening again after the Laingsburg Meet for any & all Sr. High Team members. Mark your calendar now and plan to join us for 2 nights of tenting, and 2 full days of team bonding, hard work and fun. Dates are Thursday, August 25 - Saturday, August 27 at the Shoecrew's home in Haslett.

  10. REMOVAL FROM THIS MAILING LIST is your choice at any time. Just let me know if you've decided CHAP XC is no longer for you or your family, so you won't pestered with all my emails for the next three months.

Blessings to all of you and your families,

COACH SHOE CHAP XC

FCA Sports Camp

Posted at 06/30/2016 11:02:12 PM EDT

For those of you looking for an overnight camp experience, this is a great opportunity led by a great organization.

Dan Carr is a volunteer at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp each July in Albion. FCA has been in existence since the 1950's and has been doing sports camps all over the country and the the world ever since. This is his 20th year with FCA Albion camp. It's a phenomenal week. This year, camp runs from July 18-22. It's a overnight camp taking place at Albion College. Last year, the Saltsman brothers attended camp. I would love to have some additional CHAP athletes get involved.

Here is a link to a video about our camp:

Click here for a short video about the camp

The camp is staffed by volunteer coaches and counselors. It is open to athletes entering grades 7-12. As you can see in the video, there are several sports going on during our camp. Each student that enrolls chooses the one sport in which he/she would like to participate. I direct the boys' basketball program.

The cost is $395. Sometimes there is scholarship money available to help bring the cost down to make it affordable for families wishing to send a student. If finances is the only thing keeping an athlete from attending, I will do all that I can to try to find a way to get that young man or young woman into camp.

Please let me know if you know of any basketball players who might be interested in this powerful camp experience.

God bless you!

Kirk Cousins Football Camp

Posted at 03/31/2016 07:46:04 PM EDT

Each year I have the privilege to run the Kirk Cousins Camp on Hope's campus. We are trying to get more students involved from the Lansing area and I was hoping you might be able to share the attached flyer at Lansing Christian and maybe other schools. It is an awesome camp and many participants attend who do not play football. Kirk is present the entire two days and does a great job of engaging with campers. If you know of any other people I could connect with I would be grateful. Thanks and have a great day.

Track & Field Season is Starting

Posted at 03/11/2016 08:40:19 AM EST

Looks like the warm weather has arrived just in time for us! This is your official reminder/encouragement to join us NEXT WEEK MONDAY for the official kickoff of our 2016 CHAP Track & Field Season!

Unlike the last 2 years, due to the warmer weather we will not be meeting to practice at the Westside YMCA this season. Instead, we'll start practices next Monday, at 4pm, at the Holt Middle School Track. As always, we practice every day from 4-6pm, but the minimum expectation for team participation is 3 practices/week. If you have a standing conflict with practice on any particular day, please email once (not every week) to let me know. Otherwise, practice conflicts/absences should be handled when they arise, but advance notice is always helpful to the coaches whenever possible (and especially with meets!). Please dress appropriately and plan for a few chilly days! Old man winter is not quite dead yet... just mostly dead.

I'm quite sure my email list is not exhaustive and complete, so feel free to pass this along to anyone else who may be interested in joining us and is not presently on the mailing list. If kids want to try this out before they decide, team registrations should be completed by the end of March. So the first few weeks could serve as a trial period for those unsure about joining us. The returning Sr. High Team Members will have only one indoor meet this season, at MSU on Wed. March 30th! The rest of our Jr. and Sr. High Meet schedule does not really kick in until late April (after HPA!)

For registration, you can go to the website www.chapchariots.org any time before the end of March. Payments can be made online, or checks will be collected at practices by Wendi Kribs, who will be helping us with team finances and uniforms.

As always, you can check our season schedule and meet results on our athletic.net webpages. The Sr. High page is here The Jr. High page is here

Unfortunately, 6th graders are not allowed to compete in most of our meets, though that will be changing next year. A rules change will take effect in the 2016-17 school year allowing 6th graders to race with 7th-8th graders in both Cross Country and Track. So for this season, if there are 5th-6th grade students who want to work out with the team and get a preview of what Track & Field is all about, we welcome them to join us.

I've missed all of you over the long winter... though it's been great seeing many of you at our Winter Running Club workouts! Great work by all who stayed in shape over the winter... that will make the first few weeks of practice a lot less painful for you!!

Hoping to see you next Monday!

Youth Basketball items...

Posted at 12/18/2015 08:16:49 AM EST

We have a few housekeeping items for you as we approach the Christmas Break in our season:

  1. CONCESSIONS

Tina Cleland and the Cleland family have been so kind and generous in donating their time and energy to the Concession Stand over the past few years. BUT, they need some help.

Could we get 2 volunteers each saturday to help with concessions?

Here is a link to sign up to volunteer: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0d49a5a72da13-chap3

We hope you can help out, as the Cleland's only have players on one team and should not need to work the concessions table all morning. (plus they have a varisty and junior varsity player to go watch!)

As you may have noticed, it is a relatively low stress position, most items sell for $1. older kids can help work it as well. Plus, you can still watch the game as you work.

I am hoping to avoid having to assign families to work it, so let's pray we get some volunteers to help out.

  1. GAME DAY SPONSORS

The youth league is entirely self-funded. We try to keep the registration fees as low as possible so we can introduce as many younger homeschool kids as possible to basketball. This is only made possible by acquiring Game Day Sponsors for our league.

The cost to sponsor a Youth Game Day is $130 per Saturday. Sponsorship includes recognition by our announcer (Bryan Ogle) before, during and after the games, as well as a Sign on the Announcer's Booth, plus signage on our Roster Sheets.

PLEASE, reach out to any of your employers, vendors, friends who own their own businesses, or people you bring a bunch of business to. This is a small donation that goes a long way, and our CHAP Basketball Program can really use the help.

CHAP is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization and their gift is tax deductible. We also offer Game Day Sponsorships for the older teams at $200 per day with similar benefits.

Please let Joe Gonzalez ([email protected]) know once you have a sponsor. He can contact your sponsor or assist you in any way.

  1. REGISTRATION

if you haven't done so already, we need everyone to register online IMMEDIATELY at - https://chapchariots.org/registrations

all payments for the Youth League are DUE NOW.

Detroit Lions Football Camp

Posted at 03/28/2015 01:56:49 PM EDT

Please see the attached flyer for a brand new camp that has been created through a partnership between CAL-A and the Detroit Lions Youth organization. It is a football camp for FAMILIES, yes, parents get to be a part of it! It is the Four Quarters Camp, and has been designed to appeal to the Christian community. We will be highlighting Family, Fun and Fellowship in the context of Football. We want to encourage Dads to be involved in their kids lives, help assure Moms that there has been tremendous safety improvements in the game that the media NEVER talks about, and show the importance of community leadership that can be accomplished when all work together for the good of kids playing...that it is not all about winning!

We would like to perfect this camp and repeat running it throughout the state. Please prayerfully consider families who may want to be a part of this and spread the word, via the attached flyer. The camp is in Lansing, conveniently not far from I-96. It will be on Saturday, May 30th, so we should have some great weather (Prayerfully!)

Even if you are not interested, please consider coming or sending someone from your team to view this. We would like feedback on how to make it better. Also, if you would be interested in helping coach or serve at the camp on that day, please let me know ASAP!

Blessings,

Are You Interested in Tennis?

Posted at 01/19/2015 09:53:08 PM EST

May God richly bless you!

This is a basic questionnaire to discover the level of interest and skill for students who have a desire to learn and/or play competitive tennis. My name is Aaron Gortmaker – I have been teaching tennis at various country clubs and indoor facilities since 1996. Now being a homeschool father I have a renewed desire to help homeschool students enjoy and be competitive in this sport. However starting a new program can be difficult when there is no history and no central facility. After meeting with Keith Hall we decided that it would be advantageous to discover several key factors that would determine the future success of a venture such as this.

Thanks for participation in this survey – this will greatly aid in our development of this program.

Where Did Sarah Kettel Come From?!

Posted at 11/25/2014 10:50:38 PM EST

Where Did Sarah Kettel Come From?! By Stephen Mazzone / November 24, 2014 5:32 PM http://usa.milesplit.com/articles/140688-where-did-sarah-kettel-come-from#.VHVM2fnF8sw

The difference between very good runners and those that are worthy of elite status is evident. While very good runners can consistently run times that will keep them among the upper-echelon of talent, it’s the elite runners that can bring it up a notch when the competition is at its best; can elevate their game when the pressure appears unsurmountable.

In just her second season of running, Sarah Kettel can put herself into that category.

Unbeaten on the dirt trails throughout the fall, the home-schooled junior from Michigan pieced together one of the finest races of her young career at the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) Midwest Regionals on Nov. 16. She not only clocked a fast 5K time of 17 minutes, 28.8 seconds at Indiana State’s LaVern Gibson Championship XC Course, but beat a field that included Birmingham Seaholm’s Audrey Belf, an All-American track runner and two-time Michigan cross-country state champion.

“I never even thought about winning,” Kettel said. “It was after probably one and a half miles into the race when it started to enter my mind that maybe I could win it. I started gaining on the leaders, felt fine and decided to keep going.”

The 16-year-old runner has kept going and been on cruise control since she captured the season-opening Laingsburg Early Burg Invitational on Aug. 22 with the country’s fastest clocking at the time of 17:28. That effort was more than 17 seconds under her track personal best and almost a full minute quicker that what she did the previous year in cross country.

Her performance at the Burg Invite also began a string of 11 straight victories this fall, including a convincing win at the MiHS (Michigan Home School) Championship just three weeks prior to Nike where she crossed the line two-plus minutes ahead of her closest rival with a PB of 17:24.97!

Increased mileage over the summer has made a difference, according to Kettel.

“I think I started off with a God-given talent and over the summer I was able to develop it,” she said. “The coach gave me 40 to 50 miles a week and it worked. Prior to the summer, I was probably doing 35 miles less. And during cross country, I was probably running 35 miles (a week).”

After Kettel’s initial season of cross country last year, where she generally ran in the mid 18-minute to 19-minute range, head coach, Rev. Kevin Shoemaker, felt a change was due to get his runner to the next level.

“Once we figured out how good she was,” he said, “we put her to work.”

Kettel competes for Capital Homeschool. Like other athletes that are home-schooled, she’s in a unique situation. She is not allowed to participate in meets that are run by the MHSAA, a league that has produced the No. 3 runner in the country and defending Foot Locker boys’ champion Grant Fisher and Belf, a second-place finisher in the two mile (10:10.90) at last year’s New Balance National Indoor Championships.

To make up their schedule, Capital Homeschool and other home-schooled squads are allowed to enter invitational meets. According to Kettel, the meet directors have been more than accommodating. The gifted runner and her team, which also includes Shoemaker’s two daughters, Annika and Kyria, participated in nine invitationals this season.

“We are really thankful for the welcome we had,” Kettel said.

Capital Homeschool consists of boys’ and girls’ high school and junior high squads. Team members are required to attend three practices, which are all done together on Hawk Island, a small park in Lansing that is centrally located.

Even though Kettel has a 45-minute drive, the long commute to practice is well worth it.

“The cool thing is we are all together,” she said. “I also practice with the boys, who can push me.”

In winning this year’s NXN regional, Kettel took lead for good over the front-running Belf and eventual third-place finisher, Anna Sophia Keller of St. Anthony’s in Illinois, with about 800-meters remaining.

“I felt like I had something left,” she said. “Going into the race, I missed church. Coach said to use the race as an act of worship for God. It gave me the extra strength to push pass them. The rest of the race it was all about keeping my lead and getting as much space on them as possible.”

“We never even talked about her winning,” admitted Shoemaker, whose star runner will head to Portland, Oregon for the finals on Dec. 6. “The race goal all along was to qualify for the national meet. The goal was to see how she could compete with Audrey Belf. They never raced heat-to-head.”

For two thirds of the race, Belf and Keller did the pace-setting. Kettel snuck into contention during the closing mile.

“We were happily surprised with how Sarah ran,” Shoemaker said. “She made a move at the right time. It was an incline that she caught up with the girls (Belf and Keller). I don’t think they ever knew anyone was coming. She caught them about two and a quarter miles and took the lead with about 800 to go. She opened up about a 15-meter lead and they were able to close the gap the home stretch.”

Kettel will be competing in two national meets this year. Just like 2013, she is also entered in the upcoming Foot Locker Midwest Regionals this Friday at the University of Wisconsin. A top-10 finish at that meet will earn her a spot in the finals, to be held Dec. 13 in San Diego.

The only difference from a year ago is that Kettel has great potential to not only qualify for both finals, but compete with the lead pack.

“We are excited to find out the answer,” Shoemaker said. “With the right competition, I think she can run 17 (minutes) flat. I don’t think she has reached her peak yet.”

Sarah Kettel named LSJ "Athlete of the Week"

Posted at 11/20/2014 09:38:51 AM EST

Nov. 19, 2014 - Lansing State Journal

Capital Homeschool’s Sarah Kettel has won the Lansing State Journal athlete of the week voting this week.

Kettel edged Michigan Division 1 champion and Birmingham Seaholm senior Audrey Belf by two seconds to win the NXN Midwest Regional on Sunday.

The junior completed the 3.1 miles in 17 minutes, 28.8 seconds to Belf’s 17:30.6. It is only the second time in two years that a Michigan runner has finished ahead of Belf, and the first time a runner from Michigan has won the Midwest regional – which also includes Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Ohio.

Kettel is also the first mid-Michigan area runner to qualify for the Nike Cross Country Nationals, which will take place on Dec. 6 in Portland, Ore.

This week’s other nominees were:

Malik Mack (Sexton football) The senior passed for 135 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 89 yards and three TDs in the Big Reds’ 35-7 win over Richmond in a Division 4 regional final last Saturday at Sexton’s Madjeski Stadium.

Michael Korey (Lansing Catholic football) Two of the three passes the junior caught for 72 yards went for touchdowns as the Cougars defeated Flint Powers Catholic 49-21 in a Division 5 regional final on Friday at Holt Junior High.

Natalie Crandell (Williamston/Lansing Christian girls swimming and diving) The sophomore and CAAC Red runner-up took ninth in the diving regional at Haslett last week to qualify for the Division 3 state finals this weekend.

CHAP's Sarah Kettel wins Midwest Regional

from LSJ 11/17/2014 by Dick Hoeskstra

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Her goal was to finish in the top five.

But Capital Homeschool’s Sarah Kettel surged into the lead after the two-mile mark and edged Michigan Division 1 champion and Birmingham Seaholm senior Audrey Belf by two seconds to win the Nike NXN Midwest Regional on Sunday.

“I was in the lead with Audrey and Anna Sophia (Keller from Illinois), and felt I could go faster,” Kettel said. “I managed to stay in the lead, but I kept thinking until right before the finish line that they were going to pass me.”

The junior completed the 3.1 miles in 17 minutes, 28.8 seconds to Belf’s 17:30.6 and Keller’s 17:31.3. It is only the second time in two years that a Michigan runner has finished ahead of Belf, and the first time a runner from Michigan has won the Midwest regional – which also includes athletes from Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Ohio.

“The plan was to start out conservatively,” said Kettel, who was in 35th place at the mile mark. “Then I was just focused on picking the next ponytail off in front of me.”

She worked her way up to the top five about halfway through the race.

“A lot of us on our team missed church because of this meet,” she said. “Our coach (pastor Kevin Shoemaker) mentioned that we should make the race an act of worship toward God. That really helped me.”

Kettel is also the first mid-Michigan area runner to qualify for the Nike Cross Country Nationals, which will take place on Dec. 6 in Portland, Ore.

Tackle Football Camp

Posted at 06/13/2014 08:09:34 AM EDT

The Christian Athletic League of America (CALA) has been offered 10 free spots (an $85 value) at the upcoming MYAA Football Champ Camp (http://allevents.in/livonia/myaa-football-champ-camp-2014/1442049619374663) . This camp is available to current 2-8th graders (2013-2014 school year) and will be held at Livonia Stevenson High School, on June 23, 24 and 25. Athletic shoes and a good attitude is all that will be needed!

If you would like to participate, please contact Boyd Meyers at [email protected] by June 19th. We would like to offer this to 5 CHAP families and friends as well as 5 to Christian School students. We will try to entertain all requests. If we exceed 10 with interest, we may need to jockey around a little, perhaps asking families to offer a slight donation, that added up, would allow for another participant, or perhaps ask families who have multiple players or invite friends to perhaps go half price on registration. Anyway, we won’t know this until we know who wants to go, so please do not hesitate and contact CAL-A (www.cal-a.net) today.

Spring 2014 Season

Posted at 03/09/2014 11:55:39 PM EDT

To all Potential CHAP Track & Field Team members & parents:

As hard as it is to believe with 18 inches of snow still on the ground, the time has come to get moving again! And we have a plan to overcome the weather's threat to our early season workouts.

Most of you know, though some may not, that according to MHSAA rules our Track and Field team practices may begin as early as next Monday, March 10th. With the ongoing cold weather this poses quite a dilemma. I've even thought about postponing the start of our practices, since our normal outdoor practice facility is still covered with snow. However, we're scheduled to compete in our first Sr. High Meet (indoors) at Hillsdale College on Weds. March 26th. So instead of waiting to get started, we've come up with an affordable plan to do much of our workout regimen indoors for the next 1-2 weeks, until the snow melts and we can get back on the outdoor track.

What's the solution? We've worked out a deal with the Westside YMCA, where we've had our strength and conditioning clinic the last six weeks, to use their indoor roller skating rink from 4:00 - 5:15pm. So this means that our team practices will begin as originally scheduled next Monday, March 10th at 4:00pm. We will gather at 4 o'clock just outside the skating rink (just to the left inside the main doors), and go through some preliminary announcements, then begin our workout promptly at 4:15pm. We have the rink until 5:15pm, at which time we will do some running outdoors in the neighborhood and cemetery just down the street from the YMCA. Practices will be finished by no later than 6:00pm, but sometimes earlier. Here is the location of the Westside YMCA if you're not sure how to get there: https:[email protected],-84.5990228,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8822c00cc98d9e37:0xdb1725bae978e973

This means you should come prepared for both an indoor and outdoor workout. Bring along whatever gear you need to stay warm when we head outside, as temps are projected in the 20's-30's for the next week. This will be our routine for at least the first week of practice, and likely the 2nd week too. The YMCA has graciously given us the opportunity to commit from week to week based on the weather. As soon as things warm up a bit and the snow melts, we will resume our normal practice routine, meeting at the Holt Middle School Track facility on Aurelius Rd. Here is the location of that facility: https:[email protected],-84.522373,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x8822c723376120cb:0x33e7a79ea5c58fd1

I've attached to this email a document that contains all of our team policies, and our registration form. Please read this information carefully. If you're not sure about joining the team, but interested, you are welcome to come and try it out for the first few weeks. We only need a commitment by the end of March, or 1 week before that for any senior high runners who want to compete at the Hillsdale meet. So if you're interested but unsure, please come and give it a try! I also encourage you to spread the word to your home schooled friends and invite them to join us too. In fact, feel free to forward this email on to anyone who may not have received it. Please bear in mind that while we do practice every day (to be more competitive with local schools), I'm looking for a commitment to attend at least 3 practices/week. As the attached documents indicate, when you register for the team you should expect to pay at least half of the team fee. There is also an additional charge for uniforms, and the earlier I receive your registration the earlier I can place an order. I will go over all these details about uniforms at our practices next week.

Finally, one last thing about the Hillsdale meet (Sr. High only): Please not that on that same date (March 26th) there is an HPA Titanic rehearsal scheduled from 9am - 5pm. If you are in HPA and you would like to compete in Hillsdale, this means you will need to request an early dismissal from Mrs. Duffy. Field Events start at 3pm and Running Events start at 4pm, but it takes over an hour to get there, so I suggest you request a dismissal no later than 2pm. If you don't ask for this, or it is not granted because you ask too late, you can still run in the meet - but I can only enter you in events which start later in the afternoon/evening. Please plan accordingly! The sooner you ask for an early dismissal the better your chances to get one. Here is a link with the meet schedule: http://www.hillsdalechargers.com/sports/wtrack/2013-14/files/Charger_Preview_-_Order_of_Events.pdf

That's enough information for now. Please email me with any questions. I look forward to seeing all of you next week Monday, or as soon as you can join us!

"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us!" Heb. 12:1

Coach Kevin Shoemaker CHAP Track & Field

PS. One last thing for your planning purposes: Our meet schedules are found on our Athletic.net website. This is also where all of our season results & stats will be posted. You can also check out all our results and personal performance records from last season too. I'm still firming up a few details, but here are the links: CHAP Sr. High Boys and Girls Teams: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/School.aspx?SchoolID=42508 CHAP Jr. High Boys and Girls Teams: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/School.aspx?SchoolID=42509

Thursday Oct 3, 2013 & Thursday October 10, 2013 CHAP Varsity Tryouts Location is at River Terrace Church - 1509 River Terrace Drive, East Lansing, MI 48823 7:15 is parent/player meeting. 7:30 to 9:00 pm are tryouts.

All players freshman age and up to 18 are welcome to try out for the CHAP Varsity team on October 3 and 10th.

I realize that this may be short notice for this Thursday's tryout. Please attend if you can and contact me if you can only make the October 10 tryout. Depending on the number of participants, I currently do expect to begin cuts after the first tryout on October 3. My contact information is [email protected] / phone: 517.204.7729.

I have also attached two forms that I would appreciate if each participant would print out, sign and bring to tryouts. It will save us some time if we can have these already completed. One form is specifically for CHAP and is required no matter what level an individual plays for... the other form is a new state mandated requirement regarding concussions which CHAP is mandated by state law to retain and it is also required for CHAP participation. Please take some time to review before Thursday.

Parents are requested to please attend from 7:15 until about 7:45 (or until forms are completed).

Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone!

CHAP Cross Country in the News

Hey Team,

Some nice pictures in the Lansing State Journal online addition, and an article referencing Sarah Kettel's win in the D4 Blue Race. Click here for a pdf version or Click here for the Lansing State Journal link

Also, according to the D4 State rankings on Athletic.net (using Hypothetical Meet Scores), the boys tied with Number 14 Ranked Potterville, and beat Number 13 ranked Manton. The other five teams ahead of us are all ranked in the Top 10 of D4 (#'s 4,5,6,7, and 9).

Using the same Hypothetical meet system, the girls beat the number 8, 12, and 18 teams in the State. The only four teams ahead of us at Carson City are currently ranked #'s 1,3,7, and 9 in the State.

What this means is that if we could compete in the MHSAA D4 State Finals our girls would likely be ranked among the Top 10 in the State, and our boys would likely be ranked among the Top 15.

Nice work Chariots!!

Volleyball News

Posted at 09/23/2013 12:38:01 AM EDT

July 15-18 we offered our first ever CHAP Volleyball Camp for girls aged 8-18...We had 50 girls in attendance over the course of the week, and a great time of learning and fun was had by all!! But what happens next for girls interested in being a part of the CHAP Volleyball Program this fall?

Before Monday, Aug. 5

Keep practicing what you learned at this week; look for some emails with links to online resources with ideas that can help you work on your volleyball skill development.

Please be sure all girls have obtained these three very important pieces of equipment: knee pads, good volleyball shoes, and modest shorts.

You can also begin saving for team registration fees which will be approximately $50 for elementary, $100 for Jr. High, $150 for JV, and $200 for Varsity. Once girls have been assigned to a team, you will know the specific amount due and have until W, Aug. 28th to make payment. [NOTE: All fees need to be paid in full before the season begins, unless other arrangements have been made with Rick Cooper, our finance coordinator.]

Consider how you as a parent would like to volunteer to assist with this year's volleyball program. Contact Kim Winter, [email protected], to clarify areas we still need help and to sign up if you have not done so already.

Note the following dates on your calendar

PRE-SEASON TRAINING: August 6th - August 27th

The first week of training is the most important, as during the first week, Aug. 5-8, coaches will be evaluating skills and determining which team each of the girls will be placed on. By the end of that first week, team assignments should be finalized. All girls planning to be a part of the program are expected to make these training sessions a priority, however coaches are willing to work around other commitments such as family vacations, if you simply communicate the conflicts ahead of time.

The plan is as follows:

Thanks for your patience as all the coaches have been trying to coordinate schedules to come up with workable times!

Practices will begin on Tuesday, August 6th. (Not Monday the 5th.) Throughout the month of August, preseason training will take place on the following days & Times:

Varsity: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:30 pm Jr. Varsity: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 pm Jr. High & Elementary: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:30 pm.

There will be a third night scheduled every week, but those nights will be determined week by week and attended on an "if you can" basis. (Team assignments should be finalized by the end of practice on Thursday, Aug. 8, so you will know for sure how long your daughter is expected to stay.)

So please mark the following dates on your August calendar (fewer dates than you were previously given):

August 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, & 27, with the first game for JV and Varsity on Aug. 29.

REGULAR VOLLEYBALL SEASON: September 3rd - October 26th

  • 2 times/week for Elementary: 1 practice, 1 game ( approx. 7 games) Exact days & times still being determined.
  • 3 times/week for Jr. High: Either 2 practices & 1 game, or 1 practice & 2 games (approximately 10-12 games)
  • 4 times/week for JV and Varsity: 2 practices, 2 games (JV: approx. 14-16 games, V: approx. 16-18 games, plus tournaments)

SEASON-END EVENTS:

  • Fri, Oct. 18 - Last Home Game = Senior Night (subject to change as scheduling is finalized)
  • Fri & Sat, Oct. 25 & 26 - State JV & Varsity Volleyball Tournament (We host)
  • Tues, Nov. 5 - Banquet and Season-End Celebration

We hope to see you at Aim High on Monday, August 5th!

Look for updated information on the CHAP website with specific times and other details.

Areas of Volunteer Service

WE NEED YOU!!

Each family with a daughter in the program, as part of their registration, will be asked to choose one area in which to serve. The way most of our homeschool co-ops work!

CHAP Volleyball Volunteer Service Sign-Up

These volunteers and coordinators will all be given guidelines from Director Jeff Braatz and the coaches, get ideas and input from Mary Smith and others about how it's been done in the past, then gather the necessary information, make the needed contacts, and accomplish the listed tasks. General job descriptions are below. Please ask if further clarification is needed about any of the roles.

Home Game Volunteers

Coordinator: Once the games are set, will make a complete schedule for all workers needed, contact volunteers signed up to help in each area, and finalize who is working when to be sure the following roles are covered:

  • Admissions Workers - Take money at the door from spectators coming who are not CHAP Volleyball families
  • Scorekeepers - Learn how to keep the official score, sit courtside at the scoring table during games, and make sure their * score matches that of the scorekeeper from the opposing team
  • Line Judges - Stand at the corner of the court with a flag, watch play closely to determine if balls land in or out
  • Referee Hospitality - Greet referees working at each home game, make sure they know which court they're on, assist with any needs they may have -i.e. finding restrooms, getting them water, etc.

Equipment

Coordinator: Inventory equipment to make sure we have all necessary balls, scoresheets, storage containers, medical emergency kits, etc. and that everything is in good working condition throughout the season (i.e. balls have enough air, bandaids are replenished, etc.)

Facility

Assistant: Help Jeff Braatz in making all arrangements with Aim High, reserving space needed for practices and games, communicating our needs clearly, and being the contact person if there are questions or issues with the space we're using or with our being in the building. (Possibly also at Great Lakes Christian College or any other facilities we may use.)

Scheduling

Coordinator and assistants: Help Jeff Braatz with contacting other teams/coaches, as well as referees, and setting up the season schedule for all our teams

Hospitality

Coordinator: Make a point of greeting visiting teams- coaches and players, and welcoming them to our facility, answering questions, making sure they know where locker rooms are, what court they play on, etc.

Elementary, Jr. High, JV, and Varsity Hospitality Assistants - Oversee a brief time of fellowship between opposing teams and our team after each home game, arranging for a small snack and drinks for players and coaches from both teams together. Elementary, Jr. High, JV, and Varsity Team Moms - Send regular (weekly?) emails to parents on the team to keep them 'in the loop' about all the details. The 'go between' to help each coach communicate with parents. may also want to set up some 'social' opportunities for the girls on that team to get together outside of volleyball, as well.

Finances

Coordinator: Rick Cooper - Help Jeff Braatz keep track of overall finances for the CHAP Volleyball program, make bank deposits, write checks, etc.

Elementary, Jr. High, JV, and Varsity Finance Assistants - Help each coach keep track of funds owed, funds paid, collect money and get it to Rick Cooper

Coordinator: Document our season on film. Set up times for team pictures, and snap each girl individually and teams as a group, as well as snapping action shots throughout the season. Allow families to order or have access to digital pictures of their girls, and prepare a slideshow for our season-end banquet.

Elementary, Jr. High, JV, and Varsity Finance Assistants - Help the coordinator obtain pictures of one particular team - especially looking for those who could videotape the games for coaches and girls to see themselves on camera, to review and learn from game-film.

Tournament

Coordinator: Begin working now to oversee and set in place all the details for the Michigan State Volleyball Tournament to be held at Aim High on Oct. 25 & 26!

Assistants - Help the coordinator with these two events - reserving facilities, figuring out and communicating necessary details, etc.

Soph. Kettel, CHAP to run Friday at MSU

Posted at 09/12/2013 11:12:40 PM EDT

Here is a really nice article about one of our CHAP athletes on the Cross Country team. Great job Sarah Kettel and the rest of the CHAP Chariots Cross Country team and Coach Shoemaker.....

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY, NOTES

Soph. Kettel, CHAP to run Friday at MSU

By Dick Hoekstra, Thursday, September 12, 2013

[email protected]

Sarah Kettel has adjusted well to her first two meets of high school cross country.

The sophomore who runs for Capital Homeschool went from finishing eighth in the Laingsburg Invitational in August to winning the Class 3 race at Saturday’s Bath Invitational.

On Friday, she and her teammates face 31 other smaller high school teams in the white division races of the huge Spartan Invitational at Michigan State’s Forest Akers East Golf Course, which begin at 1:10 for girls and 2 p.m. for boys.

The CHAP Chariots are one of 24 mid-Michigan area high schools competing and one of 150 spread out over four divisions.

Kettel will likely be nervous.

“I was a little nervous (about the Bath Invitational),” she said. “I didn’t know exactly what to do because this was my second meet for cross country.”

She pulled away from Bath junior Annie Fanta, who had beaten her by 11 seconds at Laingsburg, and others to win by 49 seconds in 19:38 – an improvement of 33 seconds. Kettel enjoys competing in cross country so far.

“I love it. I’ve always loved running,” Kettel said. “It’s fun. It’s really encouraging to have people out there who know you cheering for you.”

A year ago, she decided against trying to run high school cross country as a freshman.

“I had been thinking that I wanted to train by myself because I was aiming for half-marathons,” she said. Kettel finished the Ludington Lakestride in June in1:45, and the Legend at Sleepy Hollow State Park in August in 1:41.

“Over the summer, we were looking around for a cross country team,” she said. “None of the schools will take you unless you take classes so it was nice to find a cross country team that’s fairly close to us.”

She was accepted by CHAP (Capital Homeschool Athletic Program), one of only three homeschool cross country programs in the state of Michigan. Since CHAP is not an MHSAA school, the Chariots compete in the Michigan Independent High School (MIHS) state championship in Allendale on Oct. 26 – one week after the unofficial Class D meet for the smallest schools in Mount Pleasant.

Capital Homeschool is coached by Kevin Shoemaker, lead pastor of the Capital City Vineyard Church on Coolidge Road in East Lansing and a former Hope College cross country and track and field athlete.

The team, which includes 11 boys and 11 girls, schedules one meet per week for a total of nine. Shoemaker, whose son Elliott is a senior and daughter Kyria is a junior, tries to schedule as manymeets that include middle school races as possible. That’s because CHAP has 11 more girls and seven sixth through eighth grade boys who compete for that team.

New Website

Posted at 08/13/2013 11:15:42 PM EDT

Welcome to the new CHAP website!

It has a new look and feel and has been redesigned to provide you with the most up to date information about all of the various programs that we are running each season. The other improvement has been the integration of our registration process with each sport and team(s).

In the past, you would have to enter your contact information every time you registered for a team. Now you only need to provide your contact information once when you create your user profile. When it is time to register for a team, you simply associate each athlete to the appropriate team. If you move or change a phone number, simply log into your account and update your information.

Part of this transition involved changing our vendor to receive payments. After much research, we decided to switch to Dwolla. Any transactions under $10.00 are free and all other transactions are a flat rate of $0.25 per transactions. Dwolla is very similar to Paypal in that you associate your Dwolla account with your bank account. If you do not want to create a Dwolla account, you have the option to pay as a guest each time your register as well.

CHAP Tackle Football Info

Posted at 08/09/2013 06:54:46 PM EDT

If you are interested in playing footbal, CALA will be putting a Lansing Area team together, here are the details:

The Lansing Chariots and Royals are members of the Christian Athletic League of America (CALA), an independent high school and middle school football league that has teams throughout lower Michigan, as well as in northern Indiana and Ohio. The CALA is using football to build a new generation of servant leaders that is desperately needed in our world.

Our new head coach was slated to be Ray Garcia, but he recently broke his foot. “ We are still confident that Coach Garcia assembled a complete enough staff that the season will continue for Team Lansing and that will start with Coach Craig Clark.” states CALA Founder Boyd Meyers. “The thing that thrills me about Coach Clark is that though he knows the game of football, he understands that this is a mission, He also knows homeschoolers who have been shunned from being able to play in his hometown, so he understands why this league started in the first place, to give kids who have missed out, the opportunity to play high school football” added Meyers.

Due to the lateness of this change, there is a need to get moving on Monday, August 5th, at 5pm. The Lansing team will meet at the practice field at an old school that is now owned by Kingdom Life Church, at it is located at approximately 6031 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. It is just north of Miller Rd and just south of Maple Grove Baptist Church. Any questions, please email Boyd Meyers at [email protected]
